Spravato™ or esketamine has been approved by the FDA for treatment-resistant depression and is covered by insurance. Spravato™ is formulated as a nasal spray you take twice a week the first month.
Because esketamine is classified by the FDA as a Schedule III drug, SPRAVATO™ is only available through sites that enroll in a special program called a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program.
Esketamine works differently than any other antidepressant, affecting structures in the brain called NMDA receptors. This increases levels of glutamate, the most abundant chemical messenger in the brain.
Intranasal antidepressant – SpravatoTM is a new medication for depression delivered through the nose with a nasal spray device. Each treatment you spray yourself in the office.
Dissociation – Similar to ketamine – SpravatoTM will cause sedation or dissociation – a feeling of disconnection with your body or time. Don’t worry it’s temporary. Thats the reason why your monitored during treatment. Spravato also impacts blood pressure.
Rapid Relief – Most traditional antidepressant medications are designed to be slow-acting, which means that it can take many weeks for you to notice a difference in how you feel. Esketamine is different, though. It rapidly impacts your brain’s cells, bringing immediate relief from your depression symptoms within hours of treatment.
Decreases Suicidal Thoughts – Many traditional antidepressant medications may increase suicidal thoughts, especially at the start of treatment. Eskatamine is one of the only drugs proven to decrease suicidal thoughts. The only exception is lithium, which is commonly used to treat bipolar disorder.
Effective for Treatment-Resistant Depression – Even after other medications haven’t worked, Spravato was effective. Multiple studies have shown that it is an effective TRD treatment option.
Create New Connections – Spravato builds new brain connections, literally purging old networks and creating new ones. Research has shown the depressed brain has few connections in some brain areas. The negative thought patterns common in depression can be challenged in ways no other antidepressan can.
At Libertas Mind, we have an established process for using Spravato for depression treatment.
1- Schedule a 60-minute intake appointment with one of our providers. If Spravato is appropriate for you, we will discuss its benefits and also get insurance authorization on your behalf.
2-Once approved for treatment, we will schedule your appointment. The first treatment will begin as soon as possible after approval. Each treatmentt session lasts 2 hours.
3-You will be scheduled for two treatment sessions each week for the first four weeks.
Each treatment session is 2 hours long. No exceptions. Here’s how you prepare.
SpravatoTM is meant for individuals who have treatment resistant depression, which is depression that has failed to respond to standard treatment approaches with medications and therapy. In other words, SpravatoTM is indicated if a patient’s condition has not improved with two or more medication trials.
Each visit occurs in a private room. You will have access to ear muffs, noise machine, warm blankets, eye masks, and comfortable chairs to relax while receiving Spravato. You are also welcome to bring whatever you need to feel comfortable, including one other support person.
You will stay in the clinic under observation until potential side effects have passed. You will always receive a debrief before and after each treatment session with one of our team members. During the debrief session, our team members will chat with you about the experience and help you make the most of each Spravato nasal spray treatment.
Spravato is a ketamine nasal spray that takes about 10 minutes to take effect. You may experience some dissociative effects. The experience can be a strong catalyst for change.
The nasal spray medication used in SPRAVATO™ is covered by every major insurance provider. The criteria for authorization is failure of at least 2 antidepressant medications.
The most common side effects that can occur during and after taking SpravatoTM include:
If these common side effects occur, they usually happen right after taking SpravatoTM and go away the same day.
Because of the possibility of nausea and vomiting, you should avoid eating two hours before, and drinking liquids 30 minutes before, taking SpravatoTM.
Spravato is a newer therapy. We want to empower patients to take control of their health. If you or a loved one has depression, we accept self referrals and you can contact us by clicking the button below. Libertas Mind will work collaboratively with your mental health providers thereafter.
